Sira by Sel: A Trailblazer of Chic Jewelry

An influx of environmentally-friendly businesses have come to rise in recent years, along with a steadfast increase in the need for environmental awareness. Various lifestyle and fashion labels have been established with the purpose of promoting ethical consumership.

This weekend, I spoke to the owner of sustainable jewelry label, Sira by Sel, Selin Ozoglu (24).

Q. When did you open Sira By Sel?

I started Sira by Sel in September 2020.

Q. What is your business mission?

Sira’s mission is to provide dainty and chic jewels to create lasting memories while helping the earth one tree at a time.

Q. Sira By Sel is partnered with One Tree Planted, meaning that for every purchase, a new tree is planted. How did that initiative come to be?

That initiative had been on my mind well before starting Sira, it is one of the main reasons I started as I wanted a way to give back to the earth. I did thorough research on charities out there and one tree planted mission aligned the most with me and I decided to partner with them

Q. You mentioned previously that you opened your brand in 2020. It’s been a challenging year. How was the business experience amidst the pandemic and global economic hardship?

It was surprisingly overwhelming in the best ways possible, the amount of support and friendliness that was shown to me and my small business was amazing! It was definitely challenging with all the constant changes but it also made it a little more fun.

Q. On a lighter note, brag about Sira. What makes it special?

I believe the thing that makes Sira special is how much time and effort goes into curating each piece and making sure it will work to serve and create memories. Being able to give back to the planet is also an added bonus of course. It’s also a plus that Sira is a small local business and I’m always accessible for any questions and advice that may pop up.

Q. How do you think the objective to focus your business on sustainable practices distinguished it from other online jewelry labels?

I think focusing on sustainable practices distinguishes Sira from other online jewelry labels because consumers can rest assured that they aren’t adding to fast fashion when they purchase from Sira. All of our pieces are made to last and we do our best to minimize our carbon footprint while also giving back.

Q. What are your plans for Sira in the future?

My plans for Sira in the future include developing a core collection and having limited edition releases throughout the year. I plan on keeping Sira very niche and in tune with my dainty and chic outlook. I’m also working on future collaborations with various foundations and fundraisers to continually be able to give back as Sira grows.

Q. Do you have any advice for teenagers and young adults who dream of starting their own sustainable business?

Absolutely! The best advice I can give is to do your research and start, there will never be a “right time” to get started and the best way to learn is through trial and error. Find something you’re passionate about and go with it, your passion will allow it to blossom into something amazing!
